Garmin Sleep Score explained

Every morning your Garmin hands you a number between 0 and 100. Here is what it reflects, what it doesn't — and how to get more out of it than a quick glance.

The ranges

Garmin groups the Sleep Score into four bands:

Score Rating
90–100 Excellent
80–89 Good
60–79 Fair
below 60 Poor

What goes into the score

Garmin doesn't publish the exact formula, but the Sleep Score screen shows the factors it weighs:

  • Duration — how long you slept compared with what you need.
  • Sleep stages — how much deep, light and REM sleep your watch estimated.
  • Stress during sleep — derived from your heart-rate variability; a calm nervous system scores better.
  • Interruptions — awake phases and restlessness.

So the Sleep Score is a blend of quantity, structure and calm. Two nights with the same duration can score very differently if one of them was spent with an elevated heart rate.

What the score can't tell you

  • Why the night went the way it did. The score summarizes the night; it doesn't connect it to your evening.
  • Exact sleep stages. Watches estimate stages from movement and heart rate. They are useful for trends, but not as precise as a clinical sleep study.
  • Recovery in full. A long, undisturbed night can still come with a suppressed HRV — for example after alcohol or a late hard workout. That's why HRV deserves its own look: see Garmin HRV during sleep.

How to get more out of your Sleep Score

Look at trends, not single nights. One poor score is noise. A score that drops every time a certain habit shows up is signal.

Compare against yourself. An 82 can be a great night for one person and a weak one for another. Your own average is the reference that matters.

Connect it with your evening. This is where personal sleep analytics comes in: SAYA uses your Garmin Sleep Score as one of the outcomes it compares against your logged habits — dinner timing, drinks, late training, evening stress — and as 10% of its Recovery Score.

A detail from SAYA's analysis: nights with a Sleep Score below 50 are left out of habit correlations. Such nights usually reflect illness or an extreme disruption, and a single one would otherwise distort the comparison. Details are on the methodology page.

A useful first question

If your Sleep Score is often in the "Fair" range despite enough time in bed, look at your evening resting heart rate. A body that is still running hot at bedtime often shows up as more stress during sleep — which the Sleep Score counts against you.
